Choose the Right Surgeon

Choose Your Surgeon Hero

Choosing the right plastic surgeon is about more than just the surgeon’s qualifications. Your plastic surgeon should understand your individual needs and be able to address your concerns with experience and integrity. Dr. Cohen and her experienced staff provide support at every step of the process, from consultation to aftercare.

Is your surgeon a board certified plastic surgeon?

Most board certified surgeons are members of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS). Choosing an ASPS Member Surgeon ensures that you have selected a physician who:

  • Has completed at least five years of surgical training with a minimum of two years in plastic surgery.
  • Is trained and experienced in all plastic surgery procedures, including breast, body, face, and reconstruction.
  • Operates only in accredited medical facilities.
  • Adheres to a strict code of ethics.
  • Fulfills continuing medical education requirements, including standards and innovations in patient safety.
  • Is board certified by The American Board of Plastic Surgery; or in Canada, by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada®.

How important is the knowledge and experience of my doctor’s staff?

Reliable, knowledgeable, and understanding nurses and support staff have a huge impact on your overall patient experience before, during, and after your procedure. Auxiliary staff who are experienced in plastic surgery and in working with your doctor form a team that can anticipate needs and questions, help clarify your expectations, and alleviate any concerns.

Does my ability to communicate openly with my surgeon have an effect on my outcome?

Communication is a key factor in preparing for your procedure and is essential to the success of your surgery. You should be able to talk openly and honestly with your surgeon about your goals and concerns, and in turn, your surgeon should communicate openly with you. When you’re working with a plastic surgeon, you should feel like your needs are understood and addressed prior to the procedure.

Do I need a board certified plastic surgeon for non-surgical procedures such as Botox and filler injections?

While Botox and other filler injections are not as invasive as surgery, it is equally important that these procedures be performed by a qualified, experienced plastic surgeon for several reasons:

1. Botox and fillers will provide the best results when the injection is performed by a professional who has a true understanding of the facial anatomy, muscle operation, and underlying facial structure.

2. To ensure your safety, Botox and fillers should be measured and dosed precisely using FDA approved brands and by medical personnel who are properly trained in mixing and administering these medications.

3. A board certified plastic surgeon is trained to consider your overall health status when performing any medical procedure. Certain health conditions, medical histories, or recent medications can affect your recovery and the benefit of your Botox or filler treatment.

4. Facial rejuvenation with Botox and fillers requires a combination of medical science and artistic elements like symmetry, sculpting, and dimension to achieve the best result. Unlike other medical professions, board certified plastic surgeons are uniquely trained in this combination of art and medicine.
